Newcastle’s west end is not the first place most people would go looking for records, yet a handsome former school building on Muscott Grove has become one of the region’s more rewarding places to dig. Beyond Vinyl occupies a corner of the John Marley Centre, where wood panelling, tall windows and herringbone parquet set the scene for rows of black browsing bins packed with new and pre-owned stock.
Background / History
David McGovern founded Beyond Vinyl in 2017, having spent more than two decades working in and managing music retailers across Newcastle, and opened the first shop in the city centre on 31 March 2018. The Westgate Road premises ran for five years as a record shop, coffee counter and small live venue before closing in March 2023, with trading continuing online while a new home was found. The business now works out of the John Marley Centre in the west of the city, where a far larger room has kept live music part of the picture. Beyond Vinyl is a member of the Entertainment Retailers Association and takes part in Record Store Day each year.
What You’ll Find
Vinyl leads, covering both new pressings and pre-owned copies, with CDs, cassettes, DVDs and signed editions filling out the racks. Pre-orders, indie exclusives and limited variants are a genuine strength, and the Beyond Vault gathers rare and out-of-print records for anyone chasing something harder to track down. Hip hop is served unusually well for a shop of this size, with a deep run of classic and current rap titles sitting alongside rock, indie, alternative and pop, plus a dedicated corner for North East music and comedy. Hardware shares the floor with the music: turntables including Pro-Ject decks, hi-fi and the usual sleeves, slipmats and cleaning kit, along with Beyond Vinyl t-shirts, pins and bundles. Gift vouchers and Record Tokens are sold and accepted, regulars can collect on a loyalty card, and mail order runs across the UK and out to the USA, Canada and Australia.
Experience / Atmosphere
The entrance sits behind a wooden frontage with the Beyond logo above it, and a couple of tables outside give you somewhere to sit before or after a browse. Inside, daylight from the high windows falls across the parquet, and the bins are spaced far enough apart that two or three people can dig without shuffling around each other. Staff are consistently approachable, happy to pull something off the shelf or point you towards a variant you had not spotted, and there is no pressure to rush. The room is big enough to clear for live music, and in-store performances and signings remain a regular part of the calendar, drawing a mix of longstanding regulars and newcomers making the short trip out from the centre.
