Background / History
A short walk from Newcastle Central Station, Beatdown Records is a long-running independent record shop with a strong city-centre presence and a serious appetite for music in all its forms. The shop has been trading in Newcastle upon Tyne since 2006, based on the corner of Bewick Street and Clayton Street West, and grew out of the former Steel Wheels shop after Paul Donley and Nick Wrightson took it on in July 2006.
What You’ll Find
Beatdown is the sort of shop where broad taste is treated as a strength. Its stock covers new releases, classic titles and a deep second-hand selection, with the shop noting that it hosts one of the largest used vinyl collections in the North East. The range stretches across rock, pop, indie, metal, punk, hardcore, hip-hop, soul, funk, disco, reggae, jazz, blues, folk, Americana, soundtracks, house, techno, drum & bass, dubstep, grime, ambient, experimental and noise.
Formats are equally varied, with vinyl, CDs, cassettes, DVDs, merchandise and accessories all part of the mix. The shop also sells through Discogs and has built up extensive experience shipping records internationally, giving it a reach well beyond Newcastle while keeping the feel of a proper bricks-and-mortar record shop.
Experience / Atmosphere
Beatdown rewards unhurried browsing. The shop is arranged across multiple spaces, with a front area balancing vinyl and CDs and a dedicated vinyl room towards the back, making it easy to move from familiar names into more specialist corners of the racks. A chalkboard-style new-in and coming-soon display adds to the sense that the stock is actively curated rather than simply shelved.
The atmosphere is knowledgeable without being narrow. Staff expertise is a major part of the appeal, particularly for collectors who want to ask about pressings, genres, rarities or where to begin with a style they know less well. The shop’s Record Store Day presence also places it firmly within the wider independent record-shop culture of Newcastle.
