P&C Music sits on Skipton Road as one of Harrogate’s most dependable stopping-points for people who still like to browse properly—the sort of place where a quick visit can turn into an hour with a stack of finds under your arm.

Background / History

Established in 1994, the shop began life as Pomp and Circumstance, founded by former Harrogate Mayor Geoffrey Webber with a particular focus on classical and jazz.

In May 2010, long-time collector and record-seller Peter Robinson took over as proprietor, keeping the independent, family-run ethos while widening what the shop could be for the town. That shift became official in 2012, when the name changed to P&C Music to reflect a broader musical range beyond the original specialist cues. The shop later moved (in July 2015) to its current Devonshire Place address—still handy for the centre, but with a little more breathing room for the shelves, boxes and browsing rhythm that define the place.

What You’ll Find

Expect vinyl and CDs, spanning multiple genres, with a mix of new releases and a strong pre-owned presence.

The shop’s roots still show in the depth of classical and jazz, but you’ll also find plenty across rock, pop and indie, plus the kind of second-hand “deletions and imports” that reward patient crate-diggers. Stock is regularly refreshed, and the combination of shelved sections and extra boxes to flick through makes it feel more like a working collection than a static retail wall. If you’re hunting something specific, P&C can order in titles that aren’t currently in stock.

Experience / Atmosphere

There’s a quietly old-school confidence to P&C Music: you browse at your own pace, and advice is there when you want it. Peter’s knowledge is the kind that comes from decades around records and listeners—useful whether you’re chasing a particular pressing, trying to track down a half-remembered piece, or simply after a steer within a genre you’re exploring.

Browsing can come with a complimentary cup of coffee, and the shop leans into being a local listening hub as much as a place to buy. For classical collectors, there are also reference materials and magazines (including specialist titles and guides) to help you choose with confidence.
