Church Street in Ventnor hides one of the Isle of Wight’s most welcoming music stops. Ventnor Exchange pairs a proper record shop with a cafe, bar, co-working space and venue under one roof, so you can dig through new vinyl with a coffee or a beer in hand and stay for whatever is on that evening.
Background / History
Ventnor Exchange began in 2010 as a not-for-profit social enterprise started by a group of local teenagers who wanted more creative life on the Island. The record shop arrived in 2014 as the first independent record shop on the Isle of Wight in decades, and it has been flying the flag for new vinyl ever since. All profits are reinvested into local creative projects, so a purchase at the counter feeds back into workshops, events and community work across Ventnor and beyond.
What You’ll Find
The racks focus on new and newly reissued music rather than a dusty second-hand free-for-all. Genres run wide: jazz, post-punk, house, ambient, disco, psychedelia, indie, garage, afrobeat, nu-soul, rap, funk, rock, noise and experimental titles sit alongside whatever else has excited the team that week. Fresh deliveries arrive regularly, you can try records in the shop, and there is an online store if you want to follow up later or pre-order a release. Because the space is also a cafe and bar, browsing fits easily around a drink, a chat or an early evening event.
Experience / Atmosphere
Set just off the High Street at 11 Church Street, a couple of minutes from the main bus stop and a short stroll from the beach and Ventnor Park, the building feels like the town’s front room. Sofas, board games, quiz nights, comedy, talks and workshops share the same roof as the records, and co-working space upstairs gives the place a daytime pulse as well as a nightlife. It is informal and inclusive, with staff who are happy for you to take your time and dig properly. Two small steps lead in from the road, with a portable ramp available, and once inside the floor is step free.
