A short walk up from the waterfront in Cowes, Sounds + Grounds pairs two of life’s better habits: digging through racks of second-hand records and lingering over a properly made coffee. Behind its grey shopfront on Birmingham Road sits a long, lamp-lit room of wooden crates, café tables and gig posters, where the music on the shop stereo is as much part of the visit as the stock itself.
Background / History
The shop opened in July 2022 in a building that had previously been the town’s RSPCA charity shop. Turning it into a record shop and coffee spot was very much a hands-on project. The team spent months stripping the premises back, laying new floors throughout, rewiring the electrics from top to bottom, plumbing in a new toilet and building their own counter and display racks. Along the way they uncovered a forgotten extra room hidden behind old boards, which now gives the shop valuable extra space. The aim from the outset was a place that felt lived in rather than polished, somewhere people would want to stay a while.
What You’ll Find
Pre-loved music is the heart of the operation. The racks are filled with second-hand LPs, 7″ and 12″ singles and CDs, and every record is cleaned, checked and graded before it goes out, so you can buy with confidence. Rock and alt/new wave sections run long, alongside soul, funk and disco, jazz, folk, reggae, punk, electronic, hip-hop, classical, country, rock ‘n’ roll and more unusual corners such as space age lounge, exotica and stage and screen. A separate Hens Teeth selection gathers the more collectable finds, from early UK pressings of classic rock albums to scarce beat and rock ‘n’ roll singles. Fresh stock goes into the racks almost every day. Alongside the used stock there is new vinyl from a carefully chosen group of independent labels, including the island’s own Wight Vinyl, as well as turntables, record care products, music memorabilia, artwork, posters and the shop’s own merchandise. If you have a collection to move on, the shop also buys records and CDs.

The café side is genuinely part of the shop rather than an add-on. Lavazza coffee, teas, iced drinks and cakes from local bakers Calbourne Classics are served at mismatched tables set among the crates, so it is easy to sit down with a flat white between rounds of browsing. Dogs are welcome too, which suits a seaside town full of walkers. The shop also hosts occasional live evenings, with local bands and jazz groups playing in-store to a small, attentive audience. The overall feel is relaxed and sociable, with staff happy to talk records whether you are a serious collector or simply curious about vinyl.
