Background / History

The story of Boiler Room Records begins in Poole, where the business started life as a market-stall operation more than 30 years ago. Its name comes from its original setting beside a large boiler, before the shop moved into a permanent home in Poole Old Town after around 15 years of trading. The shop later rebranded in 2019 and expanded its online presence, while keeping the High Street store at the centre of the business.

The Poole shop has also been shaped by Mark Northey and Ren Northey, who helped transform the business into a strong South Coast destination for new and used records. When Boiler Room’s former Kingland Crescent branch was moved to Salisbury in 2024, the original Poole Old Town shop remained open, continuing its role as the business’s home base.

What You’ll Find

Boiler Room Records Poole offers new and used vinyl records, CDs, limited editions, indie exclusives and pre-orders, with stock covering a broad mix of rock, hip-hop, jazz, classical and many other genres. Its wider catalogue also reaches into punk, reggae and dub, ska and mod, soundtracks, world music and singer-songwriter material, making it a useful stop for anyone with broad taste or a specific want-list.

The shop also deals in second-hand collections and buys vinyl from customers, from small batches to larger collections. Turntables and music-related merchandise form part of the wider offer, giving the branch a rounded feel rather than simply being rows of LPs.

Experience / Atmosphere

Browsing here feels like stepping into a proper, lived-in record shop: part new-release destination, part collector’s stop, part local music fixture. The Poole branch benefits from its Old Town setting, with historic streets around it and a sense of continuity that suits a shop with decades of trading behind it.

The staff presence is knowledgeable and approachable, with a clear enthusiasm for matching people with the right record rather than simply processing sales. Boiler Room also participates in Record Store Day, helping make the Poole shop part of the wider independent record-shop calendar.
