Sale gained its own record shop at the end of August 2026, when Gatekeep opened in the front bay window of Emporium M33 on Tatton Road. Run by local couple Jess Campbell and Billy Goodwin, it is an independent record and film store packed with new and used vinyl, CDs, cassettes, VHS, DVDs and Blu-rays, with a real eye for the weird and wonderful and a warm welcome for whoever walks through the door.
Background / History
Jess spent around three years managing Tasty Records in Altrincham, and when that much-loved shop closed earlier in 2026 she and Billy took on its remaining stock. The pair had already been selling records at markets as a side project and had almost opened a shop the year before, so Tasty’s closure gave them the push they needed. Gatekeep held its soft launch on Friday 28 August 2026, with a customer queuing outside on the first morning, and the racks have been restocked again and again since. The name is a playful twist: plenty of record shops can feel guarded and judgemental, and Jess and Billy want to share what they know instead.
What You’ll Find
Vinyl sits at the heart of the shop, from new releases and big-selling classics to rare finds, imports and genuinely hard-to-find pressings. The range runs from boogie and dub to dark techno, hyperpop, hardcore, emo and electro-punk, and the soundtrack section is a highlight. CDs and cassettes get proper space too, alongside laserdiscs, VHS, DVDs and Blu-rays with a soft spot for horror, independent cinema and cult favourites. Band T-shirts, vintage tees and music and film memorabilia round things off. Pre-loved stock is carefully checked and graded, and if something is missing from the racks you can ask the team to look out for it.
Experience / Atmosphere
The space is compact, colourful and crammed with crates, with records lining the window and posters filling the walls. Jess and Billy are big music and film fans who are happy to talk, swap recommendations and point you towards something unexpected, and nothing is too uncool to ask about. If you prefer to browse alone, you can book a one-hour private dig, with the booking fee taken off whatever you buy. Gatekeep also buys records, CDs, tapes, films, record players and memorabilia, so it is worth getting in touch before bringing in a collection.
