Background / History
Few names carry as much weight on the British soul scene as Beatin’ Rhythm. The shop first opened in 1990, trading in its earliest days under the name Goldmine, and for many years it was a fixture of Manchester city centre, occupying premises on Tib Street in the heart of the Northern Quarter. There it became a regular pilgrimage for soul fans, DJs and crate-diggers from across the North West and far beyond. In 2015 the business moved a few miles north to Bank House Studios on Warwick Street in Prestwich, where it now trades from the first floor. More than three decades on, it remains one of the most respected specialist soul dealers in the country.
What You’ll Find
The shop’s stock-in-trade is original American 7″ vinyl, with boxes and shelves given over to Northern Soul, modern soul, funk, rare soul, Motown and classic rhythm and blues. Genuinely scarce and sought-after 45s sit alongside quality reissues and current pressings that keep the sound within reach of newer collectors, and there is a steady run of 12″ records, CDs and music books to dig through as well. The range stretches past soul too, taking in doo wop, fifties rock and roll, rockabilly and country. Practical extras such as record boxes, coloured card sleeves and storage accessories round things out. A busy mail-order and online operation, refreshed each week, carries the shop’s reach well beyond Greater Manchester and out to collectors around the world.
Experience / Atmosphere
Beatin’ Rhythm is a shop run by people who live and breathe this music, and that depth of knowledge sets the tone of any visit. Browsing is unhurried, with the emphasis squarely on the records themselves rather than on a quick sale, and conversation about a particular label, pressing or obscure dancefloor favourite comes easily. For seasoned collectors it is a place to chase the rarities that rarely surface elsewhere, while newcomers to soul are met with patient, informed guidance. The first-floor setting at Bank House Studios gives the space a focused, almost club-room feel, and its standing as an institution within the Northern Soul community is well earned.
