Set above the bustle of Leigh on the third floor of Spinners Mill, Sticky Black Tarmac brings an independent record-shop sensibility to one of the town’s most distinctive creative buildings. The shop first opened in 2021 in Walkden before moving along the East Lancs Road to Spinners Mill in March 2023, where it now serves Leigh, Wigan, Greater Manchester and travelling vinyl buyers from further afield. Owner Brandan Nolan built the shop from a personal love of music, moving from office work into record retail with the aim of creating a space where people could find favourite albums and discover something new.

What You’ll Find

Sticky Black Tarmac stocks a broad vinyl range rather than focusing on one narrow niche. The racks cover indie and alternative, rock, pop, punk, new wave, grunge, jazz, funk, soul, blues, folk, country, hip hop, R&B, soundtracks, compilations, world music and electronic, experimental and ambient records. New releases and reissues are a regular part of the shop’s offer, alongside pre-loved and second-hand stock, with the online shop also supporting home delivery and click-and-collect browsing. The shop also offers gift cards, accessories and an ultrasonic vinyl cleaning service for 7″, 10″ and 12″ records.

Experience / Atmosphere

The shop’s position high in Spinners Mill gives it a bright, individual setting, with natural light, a view from the upper floor and a pace that suits proper rack-digging. It is a compact but well-curated space, with the kind of selection that can move from well-known artists to left-field discoveries without making either feel out of place. Customer feedback frequently highlights Brandan’s knowledge, friendly manner and willingness to help track down titles, while the shop’s own approach is rooted in being relaxed, welcoming and open to all kinds of listeners.
