A landmark of Leeds’ independent music culture, Jumbo Records combines serious musical depth with the easy-going feel of a shop built around discovery, conversation and long-standing local loyalty.
Background / History
Jumbo Records opened in 1971, founded by Hunter Smith after his work with Jumbo Mobile Discotheque, with the shop’s name and logo growing out of that DJ and disco background. Its earliest identity was rooted in reggae and soul, with Isaac Hayes’ Black Moses remembered as one of its first major sellers. Hunter and Lornette Smith ran the shop for decades before selling it in 2014 to Nick Fraser and Justinia Lewis, long-time customers who retained its community spirit and much-loved staff. In 2017, Jumbo moved into its current home at 1–3 Merrion Centre, giving the shop more space for records, CDs, books, magazines, merchandise, tickets, styli and accessories, as well as a small in-store stage.
What You’ll Find
Jumbo is not a narrow specialist store; its strength lies in breadth and depth. The racks cover vinyl and CD across rock, indie, soul, reggae, jazz, electronic, folk, world music, hip-hop, pop, reissues, new releases and carefully chosen classics. Its early Northern Soul, soul and reggae roots still matter, but the modern shop is wide-ranging, with staff recommendations helping customers move between familiar names and less obvious finds.
Alongside music, visitors can browse gig tickets, books, magazines, band merchandise, record bags, slip mats, cartridges, styli and other record-care essentials. The shop also gives space to local releases, event posters and flyers, keeping it closely connected to the wider Leeds music scene.
Experience / Atmosphere
Browsing Jumbo feels like entering a proper city record shop with history in the walls. Posters, flyers and hand-written recommendations give the place a lived-in cultural texture, while the staff bring the kind of knowledge that makes a difference whether you are asking for a back-catalogue title, a new release or a left-field recommendation. The atmosphere is inclusive rather than intimidating: serious about music, but approachable for casual browsers, students, collectors and regulars alike.
Its role goes well beyond retail. Jumbo has hosted in-store performances, Q&As, DJ sets, signings and film-related events, with past in-store artists including Billy Bragg, Kae Tempest, Corinne Bailey Rae, English Teacher, Villagers, Greentea Peng and Asian Dub Foundation. It has also been involved in Record Store Day since the event began in 2007, making it a key stop for limited releases and shop-floor music culture in Leeds.
