Vinyl Vanguard sits inside CRATE on St James Street, giving Walthamstow’s buzzing little creative hub a proper crate-digging heartbeat — the sort of place where you come in for “one record” and leave with a story as well as a bag.
Background / History
The shop grew out of Mike’s long-standing life as a collector, starting simply: a kitchen table, a stack of records, and the realisation that every browse quickly became a chat about gigs, clubs, holidays, and hand-me-down favourites. A short pop-up opportunity on Hoe Street in 2016 helped prove there was an audience for a more permanent setup, and Vinyl Vanguard soon evolved through vinyl markets and a stint at Wood Street Indoor Market. In 2017, Simon joined the fold, bringing his own listening obsessions and an eye for the meeting point between sound, sleeve design and good liner notes. In October 2019, the shop moved into CRATE on St James Street, right by the station — a spot that suits its mix of community energy and serious record-hunting.
What You’ll Find
Vinyl Vanguard is broad in taste but particularly strong where deep listening lives. Jazz is a cornerstone (from early foundations through to adventurous, free and avant-leaning corners), and the racks comfortably roam through blues, soul, reggae and ska, folk, country, Latin and African sounds, plus rock, punk/post-punk, ambient and dance-floor gear. It’s a shop that respects the album as an object, but it also takes singles seriously: thousands of 7″s spanning the decades, with dedicated boxes for reggae, soul/northern soul, punk and ‘90s finds, alongside genuinely cheap “lucky dip” picks. While second-hand vinyl is the main event, you’ll also see carefully chosen newer releases, and there’s usually something local in the mix too — artists and labels with roots in East London.
Experience / Atmosphere
Browsing here feels unrushed and human. The conversation is part of the point: staff are happy to talk you through a hunch, swap recommendations, or help track down a specific title. The setting inside CRATE adds to the rhythm of a visit — you can arrive, dig for an hour, then step out into a wider cluster of independent food and maker businesses. Look up while you’re flipping and you may notice original artwork on the walls too, reinforcing that Vinyl Vanguard isn’t just a retail unit: it’s a small cultural corner where sound, design and local creativity overlap.
