I ran into this place during my trip to London. It's open from pretty early (maybe before 10am?), so is a great place to spend time when you woke up too early with jetlag. The owner is really nice. He let me play the vinyls with speakers, and he was ready to recommend me on my second visit. I got a dancehall, some new wave and techno records for affordable price. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
Got some decent Vinyls from there today. I will always have a play of them to make sure there’s no scratches ruining the vinyls from playing properly. After being told I could play them, I was told I couldn’t play anymore as it wasn’t a ‘duke box’ in the owners word. Sadly got home to find some major scratches on one side of an MJ Cole record. Bit of a sour end to hunting around after quite a pleasant start
Terrible customer service. After buying some records from the guy then asked if I could listen to a few more records to potentially buy when he then gave a pretty rude reaction and refused saying I haven’t spent enough money so is not worth his time and effort. Clearly I’m not the first person to have this either.
Great place with a really kind owner and great atmosphere. Sometimes in record shops it’s a struggle to find anything interesting but here there was a packed selection and ordered by genre which I think is a great touch. Definitely recommend and hope to go again.
I stumbled upon Johnny Skates records when I was on the look out for a few 7inch records to play at a monthly record roulette at the Neptune pub in Broadstairs. My brief was tracks that were rare, funky and affordable and Johnny delivered big time. He plucked a veritable smorgasboard of tunes and I walked away with 5 for £15 plus an additional £2 Tiffany 7" xmas present purchase which I can't blame him for! Johnny has everything, a PHD in vinyl, good taste and is super helpful and friendly. Top stall!
