I honestly don’t know how many record shops I have walked into over the years. They are my spiritual home. In my experience, record shops are generally owned/run/staffed by music obsessives, who are more than happy to talk with people like me, who could talk about music until the sun explodes. Even amongst the Panacea of shops I have visited, Eel Pie Records defines itself by its excellence. Although owner Phil described it as a “mainstream” store, there was vinyl on sale from the likes of The 13th Floor Elevators, Lush and Cocteau twins. There was a good selection for both new and second hand vinyl. I walked away with 3 records, and could easily have bought more. Circling back to Phil for a minute, who I stayed and talked with for a not inconsiderable amount of time (sorry Phil!). He is a total music nut. A warm, interesting, generous and knowledgeable guy. It was amongst the best, most immersive experiences I’ve had in a record shop, and I don’t say that lightly. Highly recommended.
Absolutely awesome service from a most helpful gentleman this afternoon. Didn’t have the vinyl I wanted but immediately searched a data base for me and found it. It’s now on order! Thank you Eel Pie, sooooo much. Chrissie
Tucked away behind a wine merchant in Twickenham’s most quaint and trinket-like street with always a good selection of used and new vinyl and other assorted fare. Kevin, Phil and Leila are all committed musicians and enthusiasts and this heart-on-sleeve passion underpins making the difference to what could have been merely a well-run concern. Their digital presence is a welter of personal recommendations and there are frequent ‘soirées’ in the shop for launching new releases, even the occasional artist in-store performance. Well done all.
Great collection of second hand records which are mostly in good condition. Despite the crushing effect of the pandemic this friendly vinyl store is still here and thriving! Knowledgeable owners and staff. My companion found plenty of decently priced second hand gems amongst their tucked away selections. They have selections on every genre(even Australian aboriginal music!) It is worth noting that they have done a certain level of filtering on their stock - you can easily find things you like from your favourite musicians. Worth visiting. Yes, it’s tough out there – these independent traders are so awesome and well-informed. They deserve our support!
The much hyped vinyl revival has provided impetus for the proliferation of local record shops catering to mainly a new generation of enthusiasts. This bright and airy store serves as an exemplar of the trend; a savvy hand evident here. The new selection encompasses the style spectrum though with minimal depth and little divergence, a tip-toe through the ‘evergreen’ classics and a dab at the new and currently trendy. The second-hand selection, at this time, very much belabours the obvious, with no real surprises amongst the ‘same-old’ though the prices be outstanding and the items scrutinised. A token adjunct CD selection, T-shirts, bits and bobs and coffee add accent and ‘synergy’ to the mix. If you’ve fallen for vinyl do yourself a favour and check out the Pie.
